Choosing between Eyelash Perms, Extensions and Eyelash Tinting

At the Shizuka New York Day Spa we are often asked about the differences between perming the eyelashes, dyeing the lash hairs with tinting, and placing eyelash extensions. While the decision to either perm, tint, or extend your lashes is entirely personal, here are a few guidelines to help you make the best decision for you.

My eyelashes are too short...

Because Eyelash Perms control the direction of the lashes they can sometimes give the impression of greater length (see the eyelash perm before and after photos below). Tinting the eyelashes can also make them seem longer in the case of blonde lashes and other lighter colored hair. Eyelash Extensions are the most effective at adding actual length to short lashes.

The lengths of my eyelashes are uneven...

If eyelash length appears to be uneven because the way that the eyelashes curl is not uniform, an Eyelash Perm can help. However, extending the eyelashes is the best way to create an even and uniform length in the lash hairs.

My eyelashes grow in different directions...

The added volume from eyelash extensions can sometimes hide random directional growth in the lashes. An Eyelash Perm is the best at correcting lashes that look out of control.

My eyelashes are too thin...

Eyelash Extensions will immediately add volume to thin lashes.   Applying extensions is appropriate as long as the lashes are strong enough to support the weight of the extensions and adhesive.  Perming or dyeing the lashes a darker color can also give the illusion of volume, although this is usually not as dramatic as with eyelash extensions.

The color of my lashes is so light that they are nearly invisible...

Tinting your lashes a darker shade will immediately make invisible lashes look more pronounced and dramatic. This is the best option if you are generally happy with the look of your lashes, other than their color, and want to reduce the need for mascara. Adding extensions darker than your natural shade of hair will also make the lashes appear darker, and will additionally add fullness to the eyelashes.

My eyelashes are too curly, or not curly enough...

An Eyelash Perm is the best way to change the natural curl of your lashes. Tinting or adding extensions may exaggerate the problem.
