Intese Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment provides long-lasting results
for permanent hair reduction. The system works by emitting
pulses of intense light into the hair follicles. Follicle
pigment absorbs the light and converts it into heat which
loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for
new hair growth. A portion of the hair removed with IPL systems will not grow back for months, and will
grow back thinner and lighter in color. Other hair will
not grow back at all.
Most people find the IPL to be significantly
more comfortable than other means of hair removal. Thanks
to its new advanced technology, SHIZUKA new york day spa in Manhattan and its MediLux System works several
times faster than other light-based hair removal systems.
Small areas, such as the underarms, upper lip, and bikini
line, can be treated in about 5 minutes. Other areas, such
as a womans legs or a mans back, can usually
be treated in less than 30 minutes. In addition, hair does
not need to grow out before treatment. With IPL treatment you can remain virtually hair-free all the time.

Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions
How many IPL hair removal treatments will I need to see results?
Although you will see results after the first treatment, permanent hair reduction may take 3-6 sessions, depending on the individual. SHIZUKA new york Spa offers discounted packages of 3 treatments and 6 treatments. For more information, please see our pricing guide.
Does my hair need to grow out before my IPL treatment?
No. Unlike waxing and electrolysis, Intense Pulsed Light hair removal grabs onto the pigment of the hair rather than the hair itself. Please shave or closely trim hair in the treatment area before every treatment.
Are there any special precautions I should take before having IPL hair removal?
- Discontinue sun tanning, including the use of tanning beds and self-tanning creams 4 weeks before, and throughout the treatment course. Always use an SPF 30, or greater, sunscreen on any treatment area that will be exposed to the sun and reapply every 2 hours throughout the day. Wear protective, light-occluding hats and clothing.
- Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams that include Retin-A and other Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) ingredients.
- The treatment area should be shaved or closely clipped before the first and any subsequent treatments. It is best to shave or trim excess hair during the course of treatment
- Refrain from tweezing, waxing, sugaring, electrolysis or other epilation methods for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment and for the duration of treatments.
- If you have a history of herpes outbreaks in the area of treatment you should consult your Primary Care Provider for medical evaluation and possible prophylaxis prior to treatment.
What should I do after my Intense Pulsed Light hair removal session?
Bathe or shower as usual. Treated areas may be temperature sensitive. Cool showers or baths will offer relief.
-
Avoid aggressive scrubbing, use of exfoliants, scrub brushes and loofa sponges until the treatment area has returned to its pretreatment condition
Avoid sun exposure to treated areas, as well as the use of sun tanning beds and self-tanning creams.
-
Use a SPF-30 sunscreen if sun exposure is unavoidable. Sun avoidance will decrease the likelihood of skin color changes
-
Avoid, swimming, hot tubs/Jacuzzis, and excessive exercise for 7 days after treatment or until redness resolves.

What should I do before waxing?
- Make sure that the area(s) to be waxed are clean.
- If possible, trim the hair you want removed to between ¼ and ½ inch in length to make the process more effective and comfortable.
- Topical exfoliants used on the treatment area(s) such as Retin-A, Renova, and hydroquinone, oral acne medications such as Accutane, blood-thinning medications, and topical/oral cortisone medications make the skin more sensitive and increase the likelihood of irritation and other complications. All such medication and product usage should be stopped 2-3 months prior to waxing.
- Potential risks include temporary redness, minor irritation, ingrown hairs, bruising, infection, and bleeding from hair follicles.
Are there any instructions for after waxing to prevent irritation?
- Avoid exposing waxed areas to direct sunlight and tanning lamps for a period of 24 hours. Apply an SPF 30 or greater sunscreen to any exposed treatment areas as waxing makes these prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent discoloration of the skin).
- Avoid hot baths and showers for 10 hours following a Brazilian wax (warm/cool showers are okay). Avoid saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, and other heated environments for 48 hours after waxing. Waxing and extreme heat open the pores, making them more susceptible to irritation and infection by bacteria.
- Do not use exfoliating products (AHA products, loofahs, scrubs, etc.) on the waxed area(s) for at least 24 hours after treatment.
- Wearing tight clothing, especially in the waxed areas, can result in irritation and ingrown hairs.
- After 24 hours, regular exfoliation may be helpful as this keeps the skin soft and prevents ingrown hairs from growing. This is especially effective on larger areas such as the legs, arms, chest and back.
- Clients may experience itchiness when the hair grows out. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
